Puerto Madero

After La Boca we went for a gentle stroll through yet another lovely looking neighbourhood. This time the rather posh Puerto Madero, bearing a rather striking resemblance to our very own docklands in London. It is the newest of Buenos Aires' 48 official barrios and is now home to some of its most expensive property.

In the mid 19th century there was fierce competition as to where a new modernized port should be build for Argentina's burgeoning industries. Puerto Madero was chosen and the mudflats that once were situated there were transformed into a series of harbours. It was finally completed in 1898 but was hugely over budget and corruption allegations were rife due to dodgy deals involving the now hugely valuable lands surrounding the port.

It also proved to be a rather awkward place practically and geographically, a little too far from the major railway stations that were supposed to supply it, and by 1910 the amount of cargo was already too great for the port. Eventually in 1926 a new port called Puerto Nuevo was built in Retiro.

Nowadays it has been seriously tarted up with nice restaurants, cafes and fancy apartments, but to us it seemed a lot more alive than London's endless dockland developments even on a weekend! This is possibly due to it still being pretty close to the centre of town.

They have kept lots of the old dock machinery but painted it in bright colours. I thought it looked great.

We were trying to figure out what this old building was. I loved the juxtaposition of the old derelict concrete structure with the new shiny beasts behind it.

Yeah, there I am looking over the fence.

A beautiful new bridge.

And Clairy snapped this nice shot of a passing rower.

Nice old boat.

The marina.

The skyline looked great as the sun went down.

A nice reminder of home. Note the London one has been vandalised. I thought it might have been some drunk brits with geography issues.
