Cemeterio de la Recoleta - City of the Dead

Oh hi! Part of our quality time in Buenos Aires had to be a voyeuristic jaunt to the City of the Dead. What better place to do what I, (and everyone else on the photography course at SCAT) was told not to do? Take black and white pics in a cemetary. Oh get off!...It was fun!

The impressive entrance...and it should be impressive, most of the city's elite are buried here. Just inside the gates was a map of who was buried, and where...Mmm handy.

Lol...a quality first view down one of the many rows of private family crypts. 'Dont clear it up, just whack a bit of plastic garden furniture over it!' This did little to set the tone.

It was facinating and quite spooky in a fun 'n' fake way, peering into some of the more run down, older crypts. Also maybe a bit disrespectful, but hey, it was disrespectful in a way that feeling sorry for Diana was retarded. Lol.

It was late afternoon, with the sun in the sky...a perfect light.

Most of the very old crypts had fallen into disrepair, often starting with a sky light falling in and the door to the crypt being open to the elements...giving a lovely view in, to sarcophagi of all shapes and sizes!

The cemetary was massive and even though we were practically queuing to look at the 'who's who and where map' with the best of the tourists and Argentines combined, we were soon alone in the small corridors.

A lovely example of an old derelict crypt...

A peek in through the broken glass in the door and yep, we're all full, present and correct!

A great view through the art nouveau style door to the coloured stained glass domed roof.

We did have a bit of a laugh here, mind. What with the cheery portrait of this fat man and his enigmatic smile. We thought he did have the look of Ronny Barker about him. Other bronze memorial portraits were less hilarious, sadly.

Multi-storey, with ladder.

A nice touch...and on an older crypt too. It was at this point that we saw two teenage goths in full gear having a bit of a chat on a seat, that was also cause for a laugh what with the H&M style hoody with skull n' cross bones pop emblem to go.

A bronze statue in quite a freaky pose over the top of a family vault.

A quick peek inside another revealed the decaying lace cover on a coffin and discarded shoe. Note the grate below that covers the basement crypt. Often a small stairwell can be seen leading to the room below.

After shaking off the on-mass tour guides and groups we too got a good gawp at the most visited of the lot.

Pilgrimage flowers poked into the ornate door.

Home to the rich and famous too...not that we knew who they were!

A lovely 'sky-lark' with the sun behind it, no doubt providing the old crypt with a light from heaven.

A more modern example of a final resting place for any number of the cities past presidents, military hero's, influential politicians, doctors...etc.

Old skool marble statues.

Uber modern does black marble on mass. Plenty of these.

Rammed.

The cemetery seemed to be home to many stray cats. This seemed quite appropriate.

'Yes I'm just here for the tranquility'.

And that was our quick browse, before we went to find somewhere for a cafe con leche and a sit down.

I found this very amusing, Wiji's legs behind one of the tourist signs...Lol.x
