Oh hi! Valentines day is taken quite seriously in Oaxaca, by that I mean giant heart balloons, flowers and decorations everywhere, a commercial gold mine! Yeah! We missed all that by going to Monte Alban and decided to opt out of the obligitory 'rosemantic' evening meal by heading for a cantina and having a big sesh, oh god yeah! The Lonely Planet, didn't let us down and highly recommended La Cucaracha, a cantina on a street not far off the zocalo.
Here is the window that we sat in. At night it was illuminated by candlelight, naturally, and with the shutters open we could look down on all the antics in the street and experience the frequent fireworks.
La Cuaracha, a specialist bar that stocks forty varieties of Mezcal, a drink like Tequilla, (made from the Maguay plant) was the perfect choice. It also did a special on samplers of Mezcal and Tequilla...we were happy to take them up on this offer. First, we had a couple of pints, Sol was on tap and we hadn´t eaten since lunch, so start off gently. Wij ordered some quesadillas and the bar snacks flowed.
Here we are ready to start with them all lined up. A Mezcal sampler each for approx 125 pesos- yay what could be more romantic huh?
We apparently tried a white Mezal, aged Mezcal, Fruit Mezcal, herbal Mezcal, dark Mezcal and the last one... well we didn't exactly care by then. Our lovely waitress tried to sort them all out in order of the menu, that we faithfully referred to, before each one, but hey we were fucked!
Sadly Mezcal isn´t as nice as Tequilla, it has a furniture polish/ fuel like taste. Ours came in massive shot glasses'- two shots per glass. Oh dear. We pushed on through though and felt we had made the most of this. We went on to have a couple of Tequillas and Sol´s to round it off. Laughing our heads off (barely audible above the Mexican DJ in the next room) we turned our attention to our real friends in the window... oh hi!
After the Mezcal sampler they seemed so funny and entertaining... Mr Tortoise and Mr sleeping Gecko.
Wij got more aquainted with the sleeping pottery Gecko...
Needless to say we had a great time, I can't remember leaving, or getting home, so no change there. Amazingly I didn't really have a hangover. Nice work.
