Recoleta Market

Oh hi! Another weekend market in the sunshine...it's all so good! The Argentines were out in force, thoroughly enjoying themselves browsing the market stalls and lounging around in the sunshine...we totally joined in, why not?! Apparently this is BA's wealthiest area, with many 'Portenos' moving here after a yellow fever epidemic in 1870's. We didn't really look around the streets lined with giant mansions, but headed for the park area.

Part of the Centro Cultura Recoleta...two more stray cats having a nap nice and high up, out of the way, in the afternoon sunshine.


We took a bit of a break from all the stalls to have a sit down...we chose a busy area by mistake, but had a great laugh watching this man with his peddle power and gas heated candy floss machine. He really did have to keep peddling to keep it going! The boy working with him kept eating it, which was quite funny. It was also odd to see him put in careful amounts of sugar into part of the contraption...rather like putting washing powder into a machine. I managed to steer Wiji away from buying himself one, he had already had an ice cream, of course.x


It was at this market that we discovered a man making hinged boxes out of nut shells. Yes really! They were totally amazing, if quite mental and hysteria inducing! We bought, after careful consideration and admiration, a walnut with hinge that opens like a little box of two half's, where the halves are lined on the inside edge with silver metal and sat on a little stand. I also brought a hazel nut (without a stand) but that can be worn like a locket and opens like one, with two tiny knobs as the clasp in the style of an old fashioned handbag...imagine that!!!

I have to admit that these items were so creative and thoroughly joyful that we returned later to buy Richard and Dieuwke a monkey nut peanut shell with a double hinge and stand...I wish I could be there when they open it...I know they will find it so funny and charming! I also bought a peach stone box...they were soo little money and so beautifully made. It amazed and highly amused us to look at them!

A foam puppet show was in full swing, lots of people laughing and chilling on the grass. We saw some brilliant foam puppets in Mendoza...(really wish I had brought the giant tropical fish one...how to get it home? Lol)


Across the busy road from the Recoleta market we spotted the Floralis Generica, so walked over the flyover to the grassy area to get a closer look...

We caught the sun just in time to get these piccy's.


Aparently the petals close up at night...we didn't get to see this.


It was surrounded by a raised water 'lake'...


That dips down behind the hedge infront of it.


We decided we needed to chill for a bit after the nut hysteria...these were the effects...


Far too much fizzy pomelo drink again Wiji!


Yay...a small nut-box-thingy....madness!! Lol.
